One of Matcha Maiden’s favourite ways to enjoy the Mix N Matcha magic is as a matcha green tea latte. Having given up coffee years ago for various health reasons, matcha lattes have been the answer to all Matcha Maiden’s prayers.
One of the most common questions asked though is what’s the perfect recipe to make matcha latte? Matcha Maiden has compiled a little how-to guide for your enjoyment, including options for making them in cafes as well as at home.
For our wonderful cafes
As with any kind of latte, the exact preparation of a matcha latte will depend on the particular barista and their personal style. Each of our beautiful cafes will have their own take on how they want their Mix N Matcha latte to turn out.
We thought it might be useful anyway to see what Matcha Maiden’s preferred method is from her personal experience. So we prepared a little video guide with the help of dear friends and international award-winning baristas, Ash and Linnie, of Magic Espresso on Ferrars St in South Melbourne. The steps are also set out for you below.
Steps for making matcha lattes in a cafe:
- Add a generous 1/2 teaspoon (or 1 teaspoon if you prefer a stronger taste) of organic matcha powder to a splash of hot water.
- Stir well and use the back of a spoon to dissolve the powder into a matcha syrup or paste.
- Pour in 200ml of your preferred milk (coconut or almond milk are most popular).
- Froth the whole mixture together at 63 degrees.
- Optional: add your sweetener of choice (coconut nectar is our favourite).
- Frothing milk separately: Some cafes prefer to froth the milk separately to the matcha paste in step 1 and 2 and then pour in afterwards. You can certainly do it this way, but for best results we advise frothing everything together.
- Bamboo whisk: If you have a bamboo whisk, you can use this at step 2 to create the matcha paste with a more foamy texture. However, Matcha Maiden chose a matcha powder that doesn’t require a whisk so that you don’t have to buy anything extra if you prefer not to.
- Sweetener: This is optional and is unnecessary with coconut milk, but with other milks, we would suggest adding a little bit to your matcha latte. Coconut nectar is delicious but any sweetener will work.
When enjoying at home…
For everyone enjoying at home, there are lots of different ways to enjoy a matcha latte depending on what equipment you have.
In any case, the serving size is still a generous 1/2 teaspoon (or one full teaspoon for a stronger taste). The first step is always to dissolve the matcha powder with a splash of hot water and stir well to dissolve into a syrup or paste. (See notes above re bamboo whisks).
The tricky part when you’re making at home is frothing the milk:
- Portable frother: If you have a frother at home, you can follow the steps above.
- Stove top/microwave: If you don’t have a frother at home, you can heat your milk on a stove top or in the microwave and then pour in with the matcha syrup stirring well.
- Blender: If you want to create the frothy effect but don’t have a milk frother, one trick is to add all the ingredients to a blender to create a beautiful frothy effect.
